Friday Night Markets, Chinatown

After singing myself hoarse and into poverty I felt like I couldn't afford to pay for a nice proper meal. The Princess and I opted for whatever food we could find at the Friday Night Markets (1) beacuse we're poor uni students! (2) because we hadn't been to the friday night markets for years (yes, it's sad but true) (3) because i reaaally wanted fishballs!

fishballs, meat skewers etc stand

fishballs & tofu stick ($3 each)

N.B. I found the *tofu stick* was actually tofu fish!!! MAJOR DIFFERENCE!! WHat of all the veggos out there!??!?

Colotako stall

Colotako is my favourite snack place EVER! I think there was one stage in my high school days where I wanted a colotako tee LOL!

Samurai (8 octopus & crab balls) $9.00

Sharkfin soup $4.00

This was waaay too peppery and you could really taste the poor quality but hey, it's from a foodstall so you can't really expect too much!

Our dinner!

Houtou Pancake (greentea flavour) $2.00

Being the greedy pig I am we had to go back and get me something sweet! hehehhe i settled for Hontou pancakes although there were also the usual chinese desserts e.g. red bean/green bean soups

innards shot

hehehhe look at the lovely green goo!

It was a fun night and we've already planned when we'll next go to the Friday Night Markets at Chinatown!!

Ichi-Ban Boshi, The Galeries Victoria

Ichi-Ban Boshi
Level 2, The Galeries Victoria
500 George St
Sydney NSW 2000
Ph: (02) 9262 7677

The fun of Hentai boy's bday outing didn't end with lunch, we sang ourselves hoarse at karaoke before deciding it was time for dinner. We initially intended to go to Wagaya (will post about it soon) but sadly it was too full so we ended up going to Ichi-Ban Boshi. Located opposite Kinokuniya, it is also very popular with long lines almost at every time of the day. We'd spent our queue-ing time inside Kinokuniya and by the time we bothered to re-emerge from the jungle of books they'd already called our number and we'd missed our table! Hungry and grumpy we had no choice but to wait for the next table and by the time we were seated it was already 9pm. We were all ravenous and it didn't take long for everyone to decide on a dish.

Anime boy ordered a Kirin Beer and everyone pronounced it *one of the best tasting beers they'd had* (K did not try this as K is not a beer drinker!).

Beef Tataki $8.00

The two macho-men - Hentai Boy and his friend had the beef tataki while the weaker stomached of us wondered why on earth someone would want to eat raw meat...I'm sure plenty of people enjoy Beef Tataki but for me, I just can't understand why people would want to pay so much to eat raw beef. Maybe if I tried it I'd get converted...but I'm chicken just thinking about chewing on raw meat!

Tokyo Ramen $9.30

Tofu Ramen $10.90

Tanuki Udon $8.80

Salmon Don $12.00

Yakisoba Omelette $13.00

I prefer my food not too salty so I don't usually go to Ichi-Ban Boshi, finding their ramen way too salty. But whether it be because I was too hungry or that they have actually reduced the saltyness of their soup base, I didn't find their ramen too salty that day ^^ The portions are really big and Ichi-Ban Boshi so you'll be sure to get your money's worth of food.

32cm icecream, George St

After G's post on the massive icecream I (K) just haaaad to try it for myself! I'd seen it often in Taiwanese Dramas but always thought them to be a Taiwanese fad that was restricted to Taiwan. Eating tall icecream was always on my "To Do List" if I ever went to Taiwan but I suppose you don't need to be in Taiwan to eat tall icecream!!

Situated in the convenience store next to Hungry Jacks on George St, the stall is run by Koreans with several pics of cute Korean girls holding their 32cm icecreams promoting the product.

Chocolate x Strawberry icecream ($2.70)

I was told the icecreams come in single or double flavours so of course I went for double! As G said the icecream tasted normal but the fun of licking this massive thing and the looks of awe/wonder/surprise/just plain what-the-hell-is-that-girl-eating?-stares were what made eating it so great!

lookie at the pattern! waaaay cool!

Zozo, World Square

Zozo
Shop 10, 26 World Square
Liverpool St (under monorail station)
Sydney
Ph: (02) 9267 8040

So it was Hentai Boy's birthday outing yesterday. We went to Zozo for lunch as it was close by and we really couldn't think of what to eat. Zozo is very modern and it's red decor stands out from all the surrounding restaurants. The dinner menu was quite extensive but our lunch options were limited as it was hot that day, putting us off BBQ. We all chose from the lunch specials which had two options, either the $13.90 or $14.90 set.

Lunch Special Set A $14.90 w/ BBQ Spicy Chicken as the main. (incl soybean casserole, combination deep fry, korean side dishes, rice)

BBQ Chicken close up

Korean Side Dishes

Combination Deep Fry (incl deep fried prawn & veggies)
Lunch Special Set B $13.90 w/ pork bone soup noodles as the main ( i didnt eat this and i completely forgot what it's called so i'm just making this up...i seem to do this alot ==)

Close up of pork bone soup

As advertised, Zozo is an excellent place for "happy gathering". The service is almost non-existent so there were no awkward moments where staff would look at me funny when I started taking pics of the food. We were not hurried away and sat there chatting for an age even after all our food had been finished. We'd stayed there so long that there were probably two stages where we were the only table left!

The "happy gathering" was great but the food wasn't all that great. The rice was mushy from too much water, the side dishes were too salty for my liking and the rest of it I thought was average. The presentation of the food was nice though and the pleasant time spent with friends all but made up for the food. Maybe I might have had better luck with the dinner menu?

Glebe Street Fair 2008, The Glebe

This is taken directly from the Glebe Street Fair 2008 website:

Glebe Street Fair will celebrate its 25th birthday this year and it’s definitely time to enjoy the party. There will be a wonderful carnival day enjoyed by locals, families, friends and guests from all over Sydney … and everywhere else.

"The Glebe Street Fair will be the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping - 5 weeks before Christmas. There’ll be an intriguing selection of the quirky, the funky and the unusual on offer from the 200+ stalls lining the street from the crew that bring you the popular Glebe markets every Saturday.

There’s a kilometre long centre of bustling fun, filled with stalls, fabulous international food, kids’ rides, entertainment and activities. Glebe Point Road is closed to traffic from Broadway to Bridge Road.

The Glebe Street Fair is one of Sydney’s longest running annual events, attracting more than 100,000 people every November. Run by the Glebe Chamber of Commerce, the Glebe Street Fair has always had a strong connection to the Glebe community, and is proudly sponsored this year by the City of Sydney.

The Fair is run on a not-for-profit basis, with proceeds being used by the Chamber to support a variety of local community projects."

I'm not even going to try, I'll just let the pictures do the talking =]

Macadamia Shortbread -The Biscuit Tree

OMG! Guess what I saw yesterday at Strathfield Plaza!??! A THE BISCUIT TREE STALL!! I was soooo happy!! But then I was also very disappointed coz chocolate suze wasn't there!! Irene was there tho and she was very nice, patiently letting us sample the goods before deciding to buy. I tried the macadamia and the traditional scottish shortbreads but I liked the macadamia one better. I really like how they are in bite size cubes, very cute compared to the massive slabs you usually get. I'm eating the little thats left of the pacck even now as I'm typing up this post hehehe

Macadamia Shortbread $7.50

2 much ice cream, george st

(next to hungry jacks on george st)

32cm ice cream =D for $2.70

chocolate x strawberry

chocolate x vanilla

3 days ago went out with L and we were walking on george st saw this person holding this super tall icecream.. then L went and discovered it inside this korean convenient store..... don't know the store name =D and yea.... and then we bought it... it didn't melt as quickly as we expected =) it was like some harder version of soft serve cone and the chocolate tasted like paddle pop sticks hahahhaa...

but it was fun eating hahaha tho it tasted normal and yea..

Chocolate Fondue

So here's my 10 easy steps to making chocolate fondue:

Step 1: Invite some friends
Step 2: Make sure you have a fondue set
Step 3: Make someone chop up all the fruit (strawberries, apples, bananas)
Step 4: Think about some other dippable bits (marshmallows, shortbread)
Step 5: Make your friends finely chop 200g of your fav choc (we used cooking chocolate)
Step 6: Heat 200g of thickened cream on the stove on medium heat until it's almost boiling
Step 7: Pour your heated cream onto the finely chopped chocolate and stir (we did this in the fondue ceramic pot)
Step 8: Go "ooooh" and "aaaah" when you watch bits of cream and chocolate combine and become lovely melted fondue choc!
Step 9: Ensure someone does the honours of licking the spoon, lighting the fondue candle, placing the pot of choc on the fondue stand
Step 10: ENJOY!

(strawberry dipped in waaaay to much choc to be healthy)
